Donny Osmond is a singer, dancer, actor, author, and TV host by profession, and American by nationality. He is well known as one half of Donny & Marie, alongside his younger sister Marie Osmond.

Donny Osmond’s birth took place on December 9, 1957, in Ogden, Utah, USA. He was born Donald Clark Osmond to his mother, Olive May Osmond, and his father, George Virl Osmond, who were both the patriarchs of the singing Osmond family. 

He is not the only child of his parents and has eight siblings. His brothers are named Alan, Jay, Jimmy, Merrill, Wayne, Virl, and Tom, and his younger sister is named Marie Osmond.

Early Career

Born into a family of entertainers, Donny Osmond also followed in his family’s footsteps. He started his career at a young age as a member of the singing group The Osmonds alongside his brothers Alan, Jay, Merrill, and Wayne. After a successful audition for The Andy Williams Show, the group soon became regulars on the show.

His debut performance was in 1963 with the song You Are My Sunshine. In his teens, he became a teen idol after a series of hit songs and albums. After The Osmonds disbanded in the 1980s, each brother sought a solo career and hoped to reach a more adult audience.

In 1974, Osmond and his sister Marie Osmond began to star in their own TV variety series, The Donny & Marie Show. The show aired on ABC between 1976 and 1979. He went on to host Pyramid, The Great American Dream Vote (2007), and Identity. He once again worked in Donny & Marie for two years after its revival in 1998.

As a solo artist, Donny Osmond has released 17 studio albums, including The Donny Osmond Album (1971), A Time for Us (1973), Eyes Don't Lie (1990), Somewhere in Time (2002), and The Soundtrack of My Life (2014). As a member of Donny & Marie, he released 8 albums: I'm Leaving It All Up to You (1974), New Season (1976), and Donny & Marie (2009, 2011).

Over the years, Osmond has starred in films Goin' Coconuts (1978), Ambitious (1985), Mulan (1998), Bob The Builder: Built to be Wild (2005), and College Road Trip (2008). He has also portrayed roles in the TV series The Love Boat (1980, 1982), and Handy Manny (2009), and worked as a contestant in The Masked Singer (2019), contestant,  guest performer, and guest judge on Dancing with the Stars.

Like most of the Osmond family members, he is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was embroiled in controversy when he stated that he opposes same-sex marriage but does not condemn homosexuality. He added that he believes homosexuals should be accepted in the Church if they remain celibate. 

Donny Osmond had written on his website, “We all determine for ourselves what is right and what is not right for our own lives and how we live God's commandments. I am not a judge, and I will never judge anyone for the decisions they make unless they are causing harm to another individual. I love my friends, including my homosexual friends. We are all God's children. It is their choice, not mine, on how they conduct their lives and choose to live the commandments according to the dictates of their own conscience.”
