John Beilein is an American basketball coach and has been so since 1975. He is currently the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

John Beilein’s birth took place on February 5, 1953, in Burt, New York, USA. He was born John Patrick Beilein to parents Arthur J. Beilein, a policeman, and Josephine Niland. He is not the only child of his parents and has eight siblings. Beilein is the eighth child of his mother and father.

He was educated at DeSales High School. After graduation, he enrolled at Wheeling Jesuit University, formerly known as Wheeling College. He graduated from the same institution in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. He went on to study Science at Niagara University and earned a Master of Science degree in 1981.

His ethnicity is German.

John Beilein married his longtime girlfriend Kathleen Griffin on 14 October 1978. He and his wife have welcomed four children together- sons Patrick Beilein (born March 23, 1983), Mark Beilein, Andrew Beilein, and daughter Seana Hendricks.

His son Patrick has taken up his father’s footsteps. Patrick is the current head basketball coach at Niagara University, while Mark and Andrew work for Alro Steel and the Business Roundtable, respectively.

The couple is living happily without any news of extra-marital affairs or divorce.

John Beilein – Career

College games

While a student at Wheeling Jesuit University, John Beilein played for the college’s basketball team from 1971 to 1975. During the 1974–75 season, he even played as the captain of his team. 

After graduating, he started his professional career as a coach rather than a basketball player.

As a coach

In 1975, John Beilein first coached at Newfane High School for a total of three years. From  1978 to 1982, he coached at Erie Community College, followed by basketball coaching at Nazareth College for the 1982–1983 school year.

Soon, he joined Le Moyne College as a coach and coached its teams from 1983 to 1992. Then in 1992, John Beilein was finally hired to a Division I post at Canisius Golden Griffins. He stayed with the team until 1997.

Other teams Beilein has successfully coached are the Richmond Spiders (1997–2002), the West Virginia Mountaineers (2002–2007), and the Michigan Wolverines (2007–2019). On May 13, 2019, he was named the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and signed a five-year contract.

Throughout all his years as a basketball coach, he never served as an assistant coach.
