Who is Residente?

Residente, born Rene Juan Perez Joglar, is a rapper, writer, and filmmaker by profession, and Puerto Rican by nationality. The four-time Grammy Award and 24-time Latin Grammy Award winner is also one of the founders of the alternative rap group Calle 13.

Other members of Calle 13 are Eduardo Cabra Martinez (Visitante) and Ileana Cabra Joglar (PG-13, iLE).

Residente – Birth, Parents, Siblings

Residente’s birth took place on February 23, 1978, in Hato Rey, San Juan, Puerto Rico. He was born Rene Juan Perez Joglar to his mother, Flor Joglar de Garcia, a Puerto Rican actress, and his father, Reinaldo Perez Ramirez, a labor lawyer, musician, and writer.

He is not the only child of his parents and has seven siblings, including half-brother Gabriel Cabra Jolgar, stepbrother Eduardo Jose Cabra Martinez (aka Visitante), and half-sister Ileana Cabra Joglar (aka PG-13, iLE).

Education, Ethnicity

Growing up, Residente learned to play guitar and took saxophone and drum classes. He was also a drummer in his school band and played baseball in high school.

After completing high school, he enrolled at Escuela de Artes Plásticas (School of Visual Arts) and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He then studied at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) on a scholarship, graduating with a master’s degree in fine arts.

His ethnicity is Puerto Rican.

Residente married his longtime girlfriend, Soledad Fandino, on January 3, 2013, in Puerto Rico. His wife, Fandino, is an Argentine actress, and the couple welcomed son Milo Perez Fandino on August 7, 2014. But their marriage did not last, and they divorced in 2018.

His former girlfriends are Denise Quiñones (2006 - 2009), Taliana Vargas (2011), and Renata Coltro (2011).

He is currently in a relationship with Kasia Marciniak, a model.

Residente – Career

Early Career

While a student at SCAD, Residente wrote poems and rap songs. After graduation, he moved to Barcelona, Spain, but failed to find work there. So, he took film courses and presented a short film S=emp2 or sexo = energía x masa x placer2 (Sex = Energy x Mass x Pleasure2), which he had directed while studying at SCAD.

His short film earned him second place in a short film festival of independent films. After returning to Puerto Rico, Residente worked numerous jobs – in art projects, created illustrations and 3D animations for architects, and worked as a music video editor.

After struggling to make ends meet as a music artist, he called his brother Gabriel, who recommended that he present his music to White Lion Records. He wrote the song Tengo Hambre (I'm Hungry), which gained the attention of Elias de León, owner of White Lion Records, and his A&R Director, Karly Rosario.
